Personnel of Long View Fire Department fall into one of two employment categories. We are a "combination"
department, meaning we have both full time and part time employees.
We have seven full time staff positions including the chief, two captains, and four fire apparatus operators. With the
exception of the chief who works 8am-4pm Monday through Friday, the other full time staff members work 12 hour
shifts and average 42 hours per week. Duty tours begin at 7am for day shift and 7pm for night shift. These personnel
have numerous responsibilities in addition to actual suppression related work including pre-incident surveys, fire
prevention activities, coordination and development of departmental training, apparatus and station maintenance and
more.
Like most departments in our region, there simply isn't enough funding to support full time engine and ladder
companies. Therefore, we rely heavily on our part time employees. These firefighters are "paid-on-call" meaning they
are utilized and paid as needed. Their main duties are directly related to fire suppression. Part-time firefighters at
Long View Fire Department are held to the same professional standards as their full-time counterparts.
At present, all full-time staff positions are filled. However, we still have several part-time positions open. If you are
interested in serving your community as a firefighter, we would like to talk with you. You may come by the station
between the hours of 8am and 4pm Monday through Friday. Some of the requirements we have, in addition to the
application itself are as follows:
1. Must be at least 18 years of age prior to employment
2. High school diploma or GED
3. Valid Class C or higher North Carolina driver's
license
4. Must produce documentation with regards to driving record
and criminal history
5. Credit check
6. Birth Certificate
